Our leadership team recently gathered in Indianapolis with some of the staff of Shepherd Community Center to discuss an incredible opportunity for college students this coming summer. In June of 2017, we will bring college students together from several of our campus ministry networks who will partner with other college students and young adults around Indianapolis to eliminate hunger in the 46201 zip code for the entire summer.
Students will be housed at the University of Indianapolis campus and will volunteer throughout the neighborhood Monday thru Thursday engaging in various projects. Building raised bed gardens, informing people in the community about helpful resources, signing folks up for programs, and delivering food to families in need. Whenever students are not in schools, a surprising number of children and youth go without one or two meals per day. We don’t want a single kid to go hungry for even a day in this zip code for the entire summer.
In the evenings, we will gather and debrief…respond in worship…and enjoy some time with our new friends in the neighborhoods. On Friday we will have a Hunger Summit which will bring awareness and education along with ideas on how to engage this and other social needs back in our own communities and campuses. On Saturday, we will serve with a ministry to homeless and then celebrate with some fun time together in the city. This event happens alongside of the Church of the Nazarene’s quadrennial gathering so we will experience some of those large worship/celebration services as well.
And one of the reasons I’m excited to bring my own students from the University of Cincinnati to participate in this event is because it will give them an opportunity to see the ways in which our faith, and the Gospel makes a difference in the daily lives and real social needs of communities. This event could help hundreds of college students begin making choices that lead to a different kind of life…a life that is poured out for others on mission with Christ to transform and redeem campuses, communities, and even cultures.
Stay tuned for more info. We invite college students from across USA & Canada to join us June 18-25, 2017 for a week of world changing in Indianapolis. The Delete Hunger website will be live soon!
